When to Walk Away?

Posted on August 26, 2022August 26, 2022 by retirementoptional

I read an article that quoted Aziz Ansari.  He just finished two seasons of a very successful Netflix series.  He was openly contemplating shutting it all down when there was so much more work to do and money to be made. His line of thinking was that if you had asked him when he was a young child “If you had more money than you could possibly spend for the rest of your life what would you do with it?” the answer was never “go make more money”.

When to walk away from my current employment is a scary question to me.  There are days when I am sure I will walk the day I hit FI but the majority of the days I feel like I will keep going.  I know that once I have adequate FU money I will be able to change my surroundings.  I will be negotiating from a position of strength and I know there are concessions that I can earn.

However, at what point is enough, enough?  In my sales career the answer to that questions always seems to be “a little bit more”.  But at what cost?  I get paid well for what I do but at some point, I don’t need anymore.  Is there something better I could be doing with my life?  Sales is very lucrative but when I am dead and gone do I want to be remembered as a great salesman?  Not sure that is a bad thing but not sure if I want that to be my legacy either.
